About UN-Habitat

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency dedicated to promoting sustainable urban development. We work globally to ensure adequate shelter for all and to support socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Our Knowledge and Innovation Branch, within the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge, and Innovation Division (ERSKI), leads the development of policies on results-based management and coordinates the strategic planning and programmatic direction of UN-Habitat.

About the Role

As an Associate Programme Management Officer, you will be a part of the Global Reports and Trends Unit within the Knowledge and Innovation Branch. You will contribute to the preparation and analysis of key reports on urban development, including the World Cities Report, and collaborate with various stakeholders to promote sustainable urbanization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report Preparation: Assist in preparing the World Cities Report and regional and national reports on the state of cities and human settlements.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct empirical research and analyze global, regional, and national urban development issues, including urban economics, spatial development, and local economic development.
  • Data Collection: Gather and analyze data from diverse sources, presenting findings through graphs, charts, tables, and reports using data visualization methods.
  • Policy Review: Review, revise, and summarize country reports on internationally agreed goals and targets relevant to sustainable urbanization.
  • Collaboration: Work with key partners, including governments and local authorities, on topics related to sustainable urbanization.
  • Event Coordination: Assist in planning and organizing expert group meetings, policy dialogues, and development seminars.
  • Field Missions: Participate in field missions, providing guidance to external consultants and government officials, and drafting mission summaries.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Urban Planning, Urban Development, Urban Geography, Economics, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Urban Governance, Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related fields. A first-level degree with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of progressive experience in urban development, research, and policy analysis. Experience in policy reviews and preparation of policy recommendations is required. Proficiency in analyzing and presenting urban data is desirable.
  • Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

  • Professionalism: Strong understanding of urbanization theories and concepts. Excellent research and writing skills. Ability to analyze and integrate information from various sources and present data-driven insights.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to tailor language and format to match the audience.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Willingness to learn from others and support team decisions.

Assessment

Candidates may be evaluated through an assessment exercise followed by a competency-based interview.
