About The Position

The Agronomist at UjuziKilimo plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between soil data and crop data by creating data-driven models and insights. Drawing from field experimentation and the wider literature, the Agronomist supports the development of new Agronomic Products and services that empower farmers to make informed decisions. This role is integral to our mission of ensuring farmer profitability while maintaining sustainable practices. As part of the Product team, the Agronomist will design, execute, and analyze research to enhance the accuracy of data, recommendations, and insights, all aimed at improving farmer profitability and sustainability.


Key Responsibilities

Soil and Crop Management

  • Assess soil analysis data and recommend improvements to enhance soil health and fertility using digital tools.
  • Implement sustainable crop management practices to optimize yield and quality.
  • Manage and validate current data flows from internal soil analysis tools, defining strategies for improvement.

Data and Research Management

  • Define methodologies and procedures for standardized analysis processes and the storage of analysis results.
  • Collaborate with data collection and analysis teams to develop efficient data analysis procedures and crop recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed reports on soil and crop conditions, research findings, and recommendations.

Pest and Disease Management

  • Identify, diagnose, and develop management plans for pests and diseases affecting crops.
  • Recommend appropriate chemical, biological, or cultural control measures.

Product and Strategy Development

  • Work cross-functionally to support a roadmap of analyses to feed UjuziKilimo’s agronomic advisory tools and Farmsuite platform.
  • Contribute to a strategy that combines internal and external data sources to generate meaningful insights for small-scale farmers.
  • Synthesize data from multiple streams to determine optimal systems for improving farmer profitability.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Build and sustain positive relationships with UjuziKilimo Research Partners, Precision Agriculture Specialists, and other partners.
  • Advocate for the adoption of innovative techniques and technologies that align with sustainable agricultural practices.

Qualifications & Profile

Educational Background

  • BSc. or MSc. in an agricultural discipline or related field.

Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in the agriculture industry, working with and creating value from field data.
  • Proficient in spatial data analysis, data aggregation, and visualization using Python, SQL, QGIS, or ESRI GIS.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of soil science, crop physiology, pest management, and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to assemble data from multiple sources to drive decisions meeting business or scientific objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in data analysis at the interface of business and agronomy/data science.
  • Familiarity with agriculture-specific data sources and experience working with farm-scale trial design and data management.

Technical Expertise

  • Comfortable working with messy data-sets from various non-normalized sources, including literature and un-digitized data.
  • Able to apply advanced statistical analysis techniques to complex agronomic problems.
