Introduction

The AU Internship Program is a full-time engagement designed to provide young professionals and recent graduates with valuable hands-on experience. This program offers participants the opportunity to build professional networks, develop their skills, and contribute meaningfully to the organization’s projects and initiatives.

Purpose of the Internship

The AU Internship Program offers a platform for interns to enhance their academic knowledge with practical experience, providing a pathway for developing future African leaders. Participants will:

  • Gain professional exposure by working closely with AU departments.
  • Build interpersonal skills in a multicultural environment.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of AU operations and its strategic goals.
  • Contribute to Africa’s sustainable development initiatives.

The program aims to provide interns with an immersive environment to grow professionally while fostering diversity and inclusion.

Interns will assist in providing administrative and technical support across the following AU departments and directorates:

  1. Cabinet of the Chairperson
  2. Cabinet of the Deputy Chairperson
  3. Office of the Director General
  4. Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE)
  5. Economic Development, Trade, Industry, Mining (ETIM)
  6. Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (ESTI)
  7. Infrastructure and Energy (IE)
  8. Political Affairs, Peace, and Security (PAPS)
  9. Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development (HHS)
  10. Human Resources Management (HRM)
  11. Operations Support Services
  12. Management Information Systems Division
  13. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
  14. Conference Management and Publications (CMP)
  15. Office for Safety and Security Services
  16. Citizens and Diaspora (CIDO)
  17. Medical and Health Services
  18. Financial Control Unit
  19. Office of Strategic Planning and Delivery
  20. Office of Internal Oversight (OIO)
  21. Quality Assurance and Control
  22. Ethics, Integrity, and Standards
  23. Office of the Secretary to the Commission

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the AU Internship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Educational Background:
    • Actively enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program, or
    • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or advanced/postgraduate (Master’s) qualification in a relevant field.
  2. Nationality:
    • Be a citizen of a Member State of the African Union.
  3. Languages:
    • Proficiency in at least one of the AU working languages (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese).
  4. Age Requirement:
    • Must be 32 years of age or younger at the time of selection.
  5. Integrity:
    • Possess the highest standard of moral conduct and integrity.
  6. No Prior Convictions:
    • Should not have been convicted of serious crimes (minor traffic offenses excluded).
  7. Experience:
    • Prior work experience is not required for internship positions.

Terms and Conditions

  1. Financial Obligations:
    • Interns will not receive financial compensation for travel or living expenses.
  2. Visas:
    • The AU will provide reasonable assistance in obtaining entry and residence visas.
  3. Insurance:
    • Interns must secure individual medical and travel insurance for the internship’s duration.
  4. Duration:
    • The internship is three months, renewable once based on performance and organizational needs.
  5. Travel Compensation:
    • Interns are not entitled to travel or medical evacuation compensation.

Required Skills

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the following:

  1. Technical Proficiency:
    • MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • E-mail and internet applications
  2. Interpersonal Skills:
    • Strong ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  3. Language Skills:
    • Proficiency in at least one official AU working language. Fluency in additional languages is advantageous.
