Expert Tips to Be a Successful Applicant for the Writer Position
As an experienced recruiter, here are 10 comprehensive, tailored tips to help you create a compelling application for the Writer role at Creatives MediaMax. Each tip includes detailed examples to guide you in demonstrating your skills and aligning with the company’s standards.
- Customize Your Resume with Targeted Writing Achievements
Instead of listing general writing skills, tailor your resume to highlight specific, measurable achievements that relate directly to writing and content creation. For example, instead of saying “Wrote articles for an online news site,” detail your impact: “Developed and published over 100 articles for XYZ News, increasing reader engagement by 35% within six months through targeted SEO techniques and high-impact headlines.”
- Example: “Contributed to ABC Media’s weekly newsletter, growing subscriber retention by 25% by focusing on timely, relevant story selection and personalized audience engagement.”
- Build a Strong, Relevant Writing Portfolio
A portfolio is crucial in demonstrating your ability to handle diverse writing styles and topics. Select 3-5 pieces that showcase your adaptability, news sense, and creativity. Make sure your portfolio contains different types of writing (news articles, human-interest stories, in-depth reports) that align with Creatives MediaMax’s style.
- Example: Include a mix of articles, such as one in-depth investigative piece, a quick-turnaround news story, and a feature article that was shared widely on social media. Be ready to explain how each piece reflects skills relevant to the MediaMax role.
- Craft a Compelling, Storytelling-Focused Cover Letter
In your cover letter, go beyond listing qualifications—make it personal and relevant. Describe why you are passionate about journalism and what draws you to MediaMax specifically. You might mention a favorite MediaMax article and how it inspired you.
- Example: “I was particularly inspired by MediaMax’s recent story on community resilience in Kenya during the drought. My experience reporting on environmental issues for XYZ Daily aligns closely with MediaMax’s commitment to covering impactful local stories. In a previous role, I covered a similar topic, which garnered over 10,000 shares on social media for its depth and relatability.”
- Demonstrate Your News Sense with Real-Life Examples
Showcase your ability to spot trends and identify newsworthy stories. Include examples of how you proactively sourced and prioritized high-value content. MediaMax appreciates writers who can discern what resonates with audiences.
- Example: “While working with XYZ Publications, I noticed a growing interest in digital literacy among underserved communities. I pitched and developed a story on digital access in rural areas, which became one of our most-read articles that year, drawing attention to the digital divide and prompting a follow-up series.”
- Showcase Creativity and Flexibility with Specific Writing Scenarios
Provide examples of your ability to pivot and adapt content based on editorial needs or audience feedback. Talk about how you’ve handled varied assignments and adjusted tone and style.
- Example: “At ABC Media, I was assigned a factual report on a local election, but after discussing with my editor, we turned it into a human-interest piece by focusing on voter stories, which resonated deeply with our readers and gained 50% more engagement than our typical political coverage.”
- Explain Your Research Techniques with Detail and Depth
Show MediaMax your commitment to accuracy by discussing how you approach research. Talk about specific methods and tools you use, such as verified databases, interviews, and cross-referencing sources. This helps demonstrate your diligence and commitment to factual storytelling.
- Example: “For a story on healthcare access, I consulted WHO data, conducted interviews with local healthcare providers, and cross-referenced findings with government reports. This thorough approach ensured the article’s credibility and was cited by other publications.”
- Highlight Your Digital Skills and SEO Knowledge
Since online visibility is vital, emphasize your SEO knowledge. Share how you optimize articles with keywords, headers, and meta descriptions, and mention your familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, which can help gauge article success.
- Example: “At XYZ Online, I consistently improved article rankings by using strategic keywords and optimizing meta descriptions. I utilized Google Analytics to track engagement, tweaking my approach as needed to reach a 40% increase in organic traffic.”
- Prepare for Interviews with In-Depth Knowledge of MediaMax’s Content
Before your interview, review MediaMax’s recent articles and familiarize yourself with their content style and audience preferences. Be prepared to discuss specific stories or series and explain how you could contribute to similar topics.
- Example: “I read MediaMax’s recent feature on youth unemployment and was impressed by the depth of coverage and relatable storytelling. I would love to contribute similar content, drawing on my experience covering workforce issues and proposing a follow-up on innovative youth-led solutions in Kenya.”
- Use ATS-Friendly Keywords to Ensure Your Resume Passes Initial Screening
Many organizations, including MediaMax, may use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). To ensure your resume passes through, incorporate relevant keywords naturally, such as “news reporting,” “content creation,” “storytelling,” and “digital media.” Avoid overloading but ensure these terms appear within descriptions of your responsibilities and achievements.
- Example: Use phrases like, “Experienced in news reporting and story development with strong skills in digital media content creation,” in your profile summary or experience section to improve ATS visibility.
- Send a Personalized Follow-Up Thank-You Email Post-Interview
After your interview, follow up with a thoughtful thank-you email that reaffirms your enthusiasm for the role and reminds the interviewer of a key strength you bring. Make the email memorable by briefly referencing something you discussed in the interview.
- Example: “Thank you for the opportunity to interview for the Writer position. I am excited about the possibility of contributing to MediaMax’s mission and bringing my experience in news-driven storytelling. Our conversation on MediaMax’s emphasis on impactful community stories truly resonated, and I look forward to potentially joining such a purposeful team.”
