Position: Medical Officer Intern (4 Positions)

Main Purpose of the Job

The Medical Officer Intern will work under supervision to fulfill registration requirements. During this period, the intern will have an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become a competent practitioner.


Main Responsibilities

  1. Conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the dignity of the profession at all times.
  2. Undertake appropriate clinical history and physical examination.
  3. Document all findings and recommendations appropriately, ensuring the patient record is up to date.
  4. Request and/or perform relevant investigations.
  5. Report to and consult with the Internship Supervisor and other practitioners in the department as appropriate.
  6. Communicate effectively with other health professionals to ensure continuity of care.
  7. Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives regarding diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
  8. Write accurate and informative case summaries, referral notes, and discharge summaries.
  9. Appropriately hand over patients.
  10. Present cases concisely, coherently, and competently during ward rounds, grand rounds, mortality audits, CPD, or any other appropriate fora.
  11. Participate in the identification, development, and implementation of community health programs under supervision.
  12. Perform any other relevant duties assigned by the Supervisor.
  13. Promote the practice of knowledge-based, evidence-based, quality, and ethical healthcare.
  14. Participate in the Institution’s CPD activities, research, and innovation.
  15. Provide feedback to the Internship Coordinator, Internship Supervisors, the Institution, and the Council on the implementation and progress of internship training, with a view to improving the quality of internship training.

Key Deliverables

  1. Ensure the delivery of high-quality, accurate, and timely diagnostic testing services for patients and healthcare professionals.
  2. Manage laboratory staff, develop, and implement laboratory policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Academic & Professional Qualifications

  1. MBChB from a medical school recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  2. Signed Hippocratic Oath.
  3. Internship License from the KMPDC.
  4. Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
  5. Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support/Trauma and Life Support (ACLS/ATLS) certificate.
  6. Valid ETAT+/EPALS certificate.

Work Experience & Skills

  1. Evidence of elective term at a medical facility.
  2. Demonstrable knowledge and skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Key Competencies

  1. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  2. Experience with bench or bedside clinical research.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  4. Open to learning/self-driven adult learner.
  5. Attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
