Project Background
The USAID Health Sector Governance and Strategic Partnerships project (HeGap) is a five-year initiative funded by the USAID, with Amref Health Africa in Kenya as the prime partner. The project aims to provide system-level support to enhance programmatic outcomes. It seeks to improve responsiveness and health indicator performance in ten Kenyan counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Taita Taveta, Laikipia, Samburu, Vihiga, Kakamega, Siaya, TransNzoia, and Turkana. The project objectives include strengthening health systems governance, accountability, legislation, and coordination structures.
Job Purpose
Under the supervision of the Administrative Associate, the Project Driver will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of the USAID Uongozi wa Afya Thabiti project team.
Principal Responsibilities
- Safe Transportation: Ensuring the timely and secure transportation of Amref staff and deliveries, including:
- Having the vehicle prepared in advance.
- Punctually picking up and dropping off individuals as required.
- Ensuring all necessary trip tools are in the vehicle.
- Maintaining a smooth trip with no over-speeding.
- Managing all trip-related documentation and authorizations.
- Confirming the delivery book is signed for all deliveries.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Keeping the allocated vehicle clean and in good working condition, including:
- Regularly washing and tidying the vehicle.
- Checking tire pressure and oil levels before each trip.
- Adhering to service schedules.
- Staying vigilant for possible mechanical problems.
- Ensuring economical and timely repairs when needed.
- Maintaining accurate records of work tickets, kilometers traveled, fuel consumption, and oil change dates.
- Passenger Safety: Ensuring the safety of passengers at all times, including:
- Ensuring the assigned vehicle complies with all required registrations and inspections.
- Confirming functional seat belts and ensuring all passengers fasten them.
- Strictly adhering to traffic rules.
- Reporting any accidents promptly.
- Government Traffic Act Compliance: Ensuring personal compliance with the Government Traffic Act.
- Incident Reporting: Reporting incidents and following the organization’s rules and regulations.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining up-to-date and accurate records of vehicle work tickets and monthly fuel vouchers.
Required Qualifications
Education, Experience & Competencies
- Minimum “O” (Form 4 certificate) level of education.
- At least Three (3) years of driving experience with a good track record in a busy office, preferably in an NGO.
- MUST have a valid driving license.
- Training on defensive driving or basic mechanics is desirable.
- Certificate in basic computer applications.
- Fluent in oral and written English and Kiswahili with the ability to follow instructions.
- Candidates from the local county locations are preferred.
- Strong time management skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability.
- Good general understanding of vehicle parts.
- Ability to understand precautions and preventive measures for proper vehicle maintenance.
- Willingness to work after office hours on occasion with a positive attitude.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and respect for those being served.
- Strong organizational skills.
